Bamberg the city of the birth of medicine

The 16th International Forum of Rheumatoid Arthritis Symposium 2024 will take place in the heart of the medieval #Franconian city of #Bamberg. The venue of this event bears a unique interrelation with #medicine in general and #rheumatology in particular. The scientific lectures will be held in the historic structures of the old municipal hospital. When it opened in 1789, it was one of the most modern hospital buildings in Europe. Entirely new concepts of hygiene, ventilation, fresh water supply and sewage disposal had model function and attracted visitor from many countries.

The most famous physician ever to work in this hospital was the Bamberg born Johann Lucas #Schönlein, who took a major interest in rheumatic, contagious, and skin diseases. To rheumatologists he is familiar as the name-bearer of #HenochSchoenleinPurpura. However, he was also the first to describe erosive atlanto-axial arthritis: “The localisation of acute rheumatism in joints of the cervical spine is always ominous and demands the physician’s full attention. I saw in one case, as a consequence of this localisation, an ulceration of the processus odontoides and thus a compression of the medulla oblongata, naturally with lethal outcome.” The genius loci will be the key to a successful IFRA Meeting 2024 and will facilitate scientific and personal encounters.
